Me, and My Kids

Oh No! I fell asleep early last night!  I suppose I should not have put off writing till the end of the day, but it was just me, and my kids yesterday…

After a busy morning filled with bowling, manning a girl scout cookie booth, wandering stacks at the library, and a quick stop a Jewel, we came home to some LIGHT house cleaning, and then rewarded our hard work by reading our new adventures, relaxing in companionable silence. This last part was my favorite.

The house cleaning was not. It should have taken no more than 30 minutes for my kids to do their chores, but they needed to share their feelings on the matter with enough dramatic flare that I would understand how truly torturous it was going to be.

“I can’t believe you’re making us do chores on a Saturday!!”

“We shouldn’t have to do chores on the weekends!!”

“You hate us, Mom!!”

“You don’t want us to have any fun, Mom!!”

And so on, and so forth.

The torture finally ended, we spread out over the living room, snuggling into pillows and under blankets, with the occasional giggle or exclamation of shock , and purring (the cat) drifting into the silence. It was lovely.

I suddenly missed their little bodies curled up next to mine, those same faces, bright with anticipation, surprise, and giggles, and a beautifully illustrated book in my hands.

(Those little faces enjoyed helping Mommy with house cleaning too.)
